“My little sister, Serena, told me I’m not allowed to quit, and of course, I would never quit.” 7-time Major winner Venus Williams may have stayed away from the court for nearly a year, but she’s still got the spark in her.
And the 44-year-old American has, time and again, proved it. That’s the reason why she chose to step back into action last season, with the Indian Wells Masters, despite sustaining a knee injury at the 2023 Wimbledon.
The Miami Open in March 2024 was, however, the last time fans witnessed her swinging her racket. The fans miss Venus a lot. And guess what? Their wish to see her on the court, again, might come true this season!
On Wednesday, Venus Williams dropped a picture of herself on Instagram, while working out on the tennis court.
With that, she also shared a small caption that simply read, “Lavender afternoons💜” Interestingly, the American star didn’t provide any other detail. Does the latest update mean that she’s coming back after a year-long hiatus?
For the uninitiated, Williams’ singles career took a hit nearly two years ago at the All England Club. Playing against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, in the first round, the former World No.1 injured her knee in the second game of the Slam. Svitolina eventually ousted a struggling Venus with a score line of 6-4, 6-3.
The American still tried to keep her fighting spirit intact and competed at the US Open later that season. But she was eliminated in the first round itself by Belgian’s Greet Minnen.
Williams eventually couldn’t fight her pain anymore as she found it hard to even walk properly due to the swelling in her knee. After her campaign at the Flushing Meadows ended, she took a long recovery break.
After her absence for almost a year, hardcore fans are eager to see Venus back on the court now. So much so, that they have already begun speculating over her comeback!
Fans speculate over Venus Williams’ return as they shower praising words for the American star
Venus Williams‘ social media post ended up making some of her loyal followers extremely emotional.
One fan couldn’t hold their feelings and wrote, “We miss u on the court @venuswilliams 😢❤️” Underlining these sentiments, another user even regarded her as the GOAT of tennis while saying, “You got another run, the greatest of all time to me.”
Meanwhile, several fans were quick to speculate about Williams’ cryptic photo on Instagram. “Next tournament? 😢❤️”, wrote an individual wondering if the latest update was an indication of a big announcement from the 44-year-old.
Interestingly, one fan went a step further and wondered if she would be there at the Indian Wells. “Indian Wells better have ur name on a wildcard spot 💙” the fan wrote.
Last season, too, Venus made a return after getting a wildcard entry into the Indian Wells Masters. Sadly, she couldn’t make a deep run and lost against Japan’s Nao Hibino in the first round.
But there seems to be another event she could be a part of. “@venuswilliams should I buy my ticket to the Miami Open,” wrote one excited fan, wondering whether she would step on the court in Miami in late March.
In 2024 too, Venus played in this tournament after getting a wildcard entry. However, her losing streak, following the Indian Wells, continued with a first-round defeat against Diana Shnaider. The latter beat Venus in straight sets with a score line of 6-3, 6-3.
It will be intriguing to see when Venus Williams shares an official update on her return in the 2025 season. Are you excited to watch her in action sooner rather than later? Do you think she will return?
